About This Place
Woodhill Bay, sometimes referred to as Portishead beach, is a stretch of sand, grass, pebbles and rock sitting on the south side of Battery Point. Facing west this is a great spot for sunsets and the lighthouse on the headland is a particular favourite with photographers. --> The wide bay here is actually considered two bays - Woodhill and Kilkenny Bay. Where one stops and the other starts isnβt clear. Both are rich in history with the most recent being old fortifications. There are also fossils found within the Carboniferous and Devonian rocks. The beach backs onto Portishead Lake Grounds which is a popular spot for dog walking and families. There are loads of facilities here including play areas, bowling greens, tennis courts and even an open air lido - which makes up for the fact that you donβt want to swim in the Bristol Channel. As with all beaches along this part of the Severn Estuary, swimming is not advised. This is mainly due to the strength of the currents here caused by the huge tidal range. There is also the risk of getting stuck in the mud if you wade out too far, or go for a low tide walk.
π‘ Our Take
Nestled in the picturesque Somerset coastline, Woodhill Bay is a haven where your furry friends are welcomed year-round. With its soft, golden sands, it's the perfect playground for puppies needing a gentle space or big dogs craving a thrilling chase. Unrestricted access means it's ideal for anxious dogs who benefit from more freedom. Notably, thereβs ample parking available nearby, but on sunny days, it fills up quickly. Swimming is generally safe, but always watch out for rapidly changing tides. Here at DogParkUK, we believe Woodhill Bay is a wonderful spot for a joyful day out with your canine companion.
