Wonwell Sands
π Plymouth, Devon
About This Place
A sandy beach within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Stretching along the east bank towards the mouth of the Erme estuary, the beach forms a large sandy expanse at low tide. --> As the tide comes in the beach shrinks into a series of smaller coves, with a risk of becoming stranded if you time it wrong. It is also worth noting that the currents can be strong here, particularly when the water drains out of the estuary on a dropping tide. Therefore, swimming is not advised. There is nothing in way of facilities at Wonwell beach and parking is limited. It is possible to access the beach here by crossing the estuary from the Mothecombe side at low tide. But please bear in mind you will only have an hour either side of low tide before you risk becoming stranded. If this happens you are looking at a 7 hour walk back!
π‘ Our Take
Wonwell Sands, located in the serene Devonshire countryside, is a delightful hidden gem for dog enthusiasts. Its vast, tawny sands stretch invitingly for canine paws, welcoming them year-round without restriction. The beach's remote location ensures tranquility, ideal for anxious dogs seeking quiet exploration. While there's no direct parking, a short walk from the nearest village offers scenic views and anticipation builds for curious companions. We advise bringing water for both you and your furry friend, especially during warmer months. Perfect for playful puppies and big, adventurous dogs, Wonwell Sands provides a safe, sandy haven away from overcrowded shores.
