About This Place
Whiterocks is a two mile stretch of sandy beach starting (or ends) in Portrush at the East Strand beach. The height of the waves makes Whiterocks popular with water sports enthusiasts, including anglers, bodyboarders, surfers, and surf kayakers. Equipment can be hired in season. There is an RNLI Lifeguard Service from 11am to 7pm from mid-June and during July and August, and weekends only in May and June. The dunes are very high, offering good sledding opportunities. --> The beach is accessed by boardwalk, with disabled parking and toilet facilities and some shower cubicles. Stretching from ruined Dunluce Castle to Curran Strand, the white limestone cliffs make a stunning backdrop, especially in moonlight. The panoramic views of the Atlantic, the Causeway Coast, Donegal, and the Islands of Scotland draw many photographers.Whiterocks beach allows dogs, with restrictions, from 1 June to 15 September. From 1 May to 30 September horse riding is allowed before 11am and after 7pm. Many race horse trainers exercise horses here, and the golf course behind the beach is world-class.This stretch of the Northern Irish coast is famous for its unique limestone cliffs, which have been eroded over time into a labyrinth of spectacular formations. At the far end of the beach, arches, caves and waterfalls include the Elephant Rock, the Lionโs Paw, Shelaghโs Head, and the Wishing Arch. Many caves are accessible only from the sea: check tide times very carefully. There is plenty of free car parking in main and overflow car parks, which may be busy during high summer season. There are no food outlets on the beach and it is some distance from shops and amusements.
