About This Place

Porthor Beach (also known as Port Oer, or Whistling Sands) is an exceptionally pretty beach on the lesser-known Lleyn Peninsula.  Visitors prepared to make the trek along the path from the National Trust car park will be rewarded with a delightful crescent of pale sand and lovely views.  The beach is backed by grassy cliffs and fields of grazing livestock and there are a number of interesting walks nearby. --> If you’re wondering why it’s also known as Whistling Sands Beach, come here during a dry spell and you’ll notice the sand making a distinct squeaking noise as you walk over it. This phenomenon is caused by the unusual shape of the sand grains here and this is apparently only one of two beaches in Europe where this effect can be observed. The beach is popular with families as well as with surfers and bodyboarders although care should be taken in the water as there are a number of submerged rocks and no lifeguards. During the summer season there is a small shop open next to the beach.

💡 Our Take

Whistling Sands in Gwynedd is a gem for dog lovers, offering a welcoming experience for your furry friend year-round with its unique squeaky sand underfoot that both humans and dogs adore. Perfect for puppies and anxious dogs, the sound can be a little spooky at first, but they'll quickly delight in the beach's wide open spaces and gentle surf. Convenient parking nearby makes spontaneous trips hassle-free, although facilities are a bit of a walk away. Always bring essentials like water and sun protection. This beach is ideal for a safe, fun day out with dogs of all sizes. Enjoy responsibly!
