About This Place
Situated on the west coast of the Kintyre peninsula, just a few miles from Campbeltown, is this wonderful six mile stretch of sand. Backed by the high Machrihanish Dunes this beach feels even more remote than it already is. --> On a summer’s day, when the sea is a calm blue, and the flowers are out in the dunes Westport beach is truly stunning. Alternatively this is a fantastic place for a bracing winter walk when, often as not, the wind blows hard whipping up the waves. The beach is fairly exposed to the Atlantic swells and as such is popular with surfers. The other big draw to the area is the Machrihanish Golf Course. There are actually two tucked away in the dunes, both of which are considered world class. For the jet-set getting here is easy enough with Campbeltown Airport just beyond the dunes. There’s plenty of wildlife to be seen at Westport too. The dunes are designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and you’ll find a range of flowers, moths and butterflies here. In the water you are most likely to see seals, but if you are lucky you may spot an otter in one of the burns leading down to the beach.
