About This Place
The village of West Bay, formerly known as Bridport Harbour, lies at the mouth of the River Brit, about one and a half miles south of Bridport. West Beach is one of the two beaches on either side of the harbour and it forms a cove between the Jurassic Pier (formerly known as the West Pier) and a protective rock groyne. --> Although by far the smaller of the two, this beach is considered safer for children to play in the water than East Beach. However, unlike its neighbouring beach, West beach does not have a lifeguard. The beach is composed of smooth pebbles, with some sand and shingle close to the waterโs edge. The water quality is very good and it is a great place to spot crabs, fish and other sealife in the clear waters. The Jurassic Pier, which is 240 metres long, was significantly improved in 2004. It has wheelchair access and plenty of seating. A restored 18th century cannon can be found on the pier. Parking is found along the esplanade. If youโre looking for somewhere cheaper to park, a bit further away, try the car park to the left of the mini-roundabout as you drive into the village. From here itโs a walk of around 5 minutes to the beach. There are plenty of places to eat around the harbour area. Walking paths, boat trips and other leisure activities are available in the area. Rowing boats can be hired for a trip up the River Brit.
๐ก Our Take
West Bay beach, in Dorset, offers a fantastic year-round, dog-friendly stretch of golden sand! We love that there aren't any seasonal restrictions, meaning endless fetch opportunities for your furry pal. Parking is nearby, making access simple, though local cafes are a short walk away. The water is generally safe for swimming, but keep a close eye on the tides. West Bay is ideal for energetic, larger dogs who love to run, though puppies might find the sometimes bustling beach a bit overwhelming. Tip: bring poop bags as they are not always available! Enjoy!
