About This Place
Below the cliffs of the harbour town of Watchet, low tide exposes a vast flat, rocky area, which then disappears once more as the tide comes in. --> The cliffs here are famous for their abundance of fossils including ammonites, particularly on the stretch between Watchet and Blue Anchor. Local fossil finds are on display in the Market House Museum. Beachcombing is popular on the beach, as many interesting fossils get washed up by the tides. Note that the area is within a Site of Special Scientific Interest and hammering at the bedrock is strictly forbidden. Visitors to the beach need to be wary of the tides which come in exceptionally quickly. It is best to check tide times when planning a visit. Car parks can be found in the town centre of Watchet, along Harbour Road, where there are also public toilets. Shops, places to eat, and places to stay can all be found nearby. The town centre also contains several interesting museums, including the Watchet Boat Museum, a marina, and a train station along the heritage, mostly steam- operated West Somerset Railway.
π‘ Our Take
Watchet Beach in Somerset is a fantastic year-round dog-friendly haven! The mixed sand and shingle provides varied terrain for exciting sniffs and exploring. With no restrictions, your furry friend can roam free. Parking is available nearby and the town of Watchet is just a short walk for facilities. While the water is generally calm, always supervise your dog, especially during high tide. Perfect for active dogs who love to run and sniff. Due to the pebbles, it's best for small dogs who are confident on uneven ground. Remember to bring fresh water for your pal, there will be no freshwater hose available.
