About This Place

The lovely, rural beach at Victoria Road forms part of the vast expanse of sand which makes up Formby Beach. This wide, flat beach is backed by a large area of protected dunes and wooded much of which is a National Trust Reserve. This means the pay-for parking at the Victoria Road end of the beach is free to National Trust members.  --> Please note: Formby beach car park and toilets at Victoria Road are closed until spring 2026 for a major conservation project. Visitors are advised not to travel toNational Trust Formby by car on sunny days. Get the train to Formby stationif you can or discover alternative beaches and parking on the Sefton andWirral coast. Close to the car park is Formby Pinewoods; one of the few places in England where endangered red squirrel can still be found. The dunes are also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and are home to some rare species of flora and fauna. Of particular interest are the natterjack toads - listen out for their distinctive call around dusk. An area close to the beach was historically used for growing asparagus and today the National Trust lease out an area here for asparagus cultivation. The beach has views over the Mersey Estuary.  On clear days it might be possible to see some of the Lake District Fells from the top of the dunes, and even, possibly, Blackpool Tower. This area of the coast suffers from significant coastal erosion.  In recent years, the erosion has occasionally revealed pre-historic human and animal footprints, preserved in clay, visible as the tide recedes.  These footprints are thought to be between 5,000 and 7,000 years old. There are signs on the beach warning of hazards.  Visitors need to observe the warning notices and safety flags. Dogs need to be kept under control at all times and owners must clean up after their dogs.

💡 Our Take

Looking for a carefree dog beach in Merseyside? Victoria Road Beach in Formby is a fantastic, no-restrictions choice! Dogs are welcome year-round to run free on the soft sand. While descriptions are limited, this freedom is a big plus! Parking is available but can get busy. Nearest facilities are in Formby village a short drive away - pack water! Generally safe for swimming but always supervise your furry friends near the water. This beach is perfect for well-socialized dogs who love to run. Tip: Bring a long lead for recall practice to ensure their safety especially during busy periods.
