The flat, wide, sandy beach of Tyrella in Downpatrick, County Down, is an enclosed two kilometre complex of dunes within Dundrum Bay. It backs on to 25 hectares of mature dunes located in a conservation area. There are pleasant scenic walks nearby, and the area is known as a haven for local fauna and flora. From Tyrella there are stunning views of the mountains of Mourne. --> Despite being slightly off the beaten track, the beach can get surprisingly busy at peak times, particularly bank holidays β including the car park.Tyrella beach is a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts visitors do need to be prepared for high waves and high winds on occasion. Activities on offer include kite surfing and surfing, wind surfing, and fishing. There is a lifeguard on duty in season.There are baby changing facilities and basic public toilets available, plus parking near the beach. A lifeguard service is provided during the summer season. During the bathing season, dogs are banned on this beach between 10am to 6pm.Tyrella Beach has held a Seaside Award every year since 1997. It is also a regular recipient of the Green Coast Award and Blue Flag Award.
