About This Place
Swanbridge Bay Beach is a small, mostly rocky shoreline on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, located between Penarth and Sully. It is best known as the access point to Sully Island, which can be reached on foot at low tide via a natural causeway. --> Sitting at the eastern end of the bay, Swanbridge beach itself is largely made up of pebbles above the tide line with rocks and patches of sand revealed at lower tides. On clear days there are views across the Bristol Channel and over to Flat Holm and Steep Holm islands. The beach has a quiet, local feel and is often used by walkers, dog owners and people heading out to explore Sully island. The tide comes in quickly here, and the causeway to Sully Island is fully submerged at high tide, so care is needed. Tide times are clearly posted near the shore, and the crossing should only be attempted with enough time to return safely. There are no facilities directly on the beach, but the Captainβs Wife pub sits just above the shoreline and offers food, drinks and toilets. Parking is available nearby, though it can get busy in summer.
π‘ Our Take
Looking for a dog-friendly beach in Wales? DogParkUK recommends Swanbridge Bay! This lovely sandy beach in the Vale of Glamorgan welcomes dogs year-round, perfect for off-lead adventures. The sand is ideal for digging, and while there aren't many immediate facilities, parking is nearby in Penarth. Though the bay is relatively sheltered, always keep a close eye on your dog when swimming, especially during high tide. Swanbridge Bay is brilliant for playful pups and confident swimmers. For anxious dogs, the open space allows for easy exploration away from crowds. Remember to bring fresh water and your poop bags!
