About This Place

Southerness is a wide, sandy beach, with some rocky areas.  It covers the areas either side of Southerness Point, within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is a perfect beach for walking, with dogs allowed all year round and the sands rolling on for many miles. At low tide mud flats are exposed as well as some interesting rockpools.  --> Parking can be found at Southerness Point as well as a camp site, a hotel, public toilets, and a fish and chips restaurant. There is also a golf club nearby. Visitors can directly access the beach. The main landmark in the area is Southerness Lighthouse. It was completed in 1749 making it the second oldest lighthouse in Scotland, although it was decommissioned in 1936.  During the summer months it may be open to visitors.  Seals, porpoise and dolphins are occasionally spotted in the Solway Firth.

While generally safe for swimming, do keep a close eye on the tides. This beach is fantastic for dogs of all sizes, but the openness might be overwhelming for particularly anxious pups. Our tip?
