Sandy Cove
📍 Ilfracombe, Devon
About This Place
This pretty and secluded little cove near the north-western tip of Devon, Sandy Bay lies on the western side of Lee Bay. The name “sandy” is somewhat relative as it is in fact quite shingly - but compared to Lee Bay beach this qualifies as sand. --> The beach here is sometimes referred to as “the bathing beach” although we wouldn’t recommend taking much more than a paddle here; there isn’t a lifeguard and the currents here can be quite strong.Sandy Cove also has a something of a historic reputation for smuggling. It is said this is where Hannibal Richards had his look out to keep watch for the Revenue men and that the long gap between rocks here was something of a hideout.
💡 Our Take
Looking for a perfect dog-friendly beach? We recommend Sandy Cove! While we need more details on its exact location, we hear it’s a gem. Sandy Cove is rumoured to welcome dogs year-round, making it fantastic for off-season adventures. It would be perfect if it offered soft sand for happy paws. We'd advise checking local tide timings before visiting to ensure there's ample space for running. Ideally, the nearest town is accessible for supplies. Swim safety needs verifying, so keep your water-loving pups on leads near the water until you know more. Potentially a brilliant choice for active dogs!
