About This Place

Set on a small headland, looking out over Portland Harbour, are the ruins of Sandsfoot Castle. Built in 1539 as part of Henry VIII’s coastal defences, the now-ruined castle sits among landscaped gardens overlooking a pair of small coves. --> To the south is a small, privately-owned beach, backed by cliffs which is named after the castle. Sheltered and sandy, Sandsfoot beach is popular for a range of watersports including swimming, sailing, snorkelling and diving. Towards low tide a number of rock pools are uncovered, adding to the beach’s family appeal. It can get quite busy here during the summer with the main issue being finding a place to park - so it is worth trying to get here early during the holidays. There isn’t much in the way of facilities on the beach, but you’ll find a cafe and toilets in the castle gardens a few minutes walk away. Sandsfoot beach is also home to the Castle Cove Sailing Club, which moved here from Castle Cove some years ago.

💡 Our Take

Sandsfoot Beach in Dorset is a fantastic year-round spot for your canine companion! We at DogParkUK love that dogs are welcome anytime. While the "sand" is more shingle and pebble, it's great for a good sniff and paddle. Parking's available nearby, but facilities are limited, so bring your own water! Although generally safe for swimming, always supervise your dog due to possible currents. Best for hardy breeds and dogs who enjoy a good rock scramble. Pro Tip: The tide comes in quickly, so be mindful of getting cut off! It’s a wonderfully simple, dog-friendly beach experience.
