The village of Ravenglass lies on the coastal estuary where the Mite, Irt and Esk rivers converge before draining into the Irish Sea. --> Ravenglass’ beach is composed of a mixture of sand, mud and shingle, backed by a small grassy area at one end.  Former fishermen’s cottages run immediately alongside the length of the beach.  The fells of Eskdale and Wasdale are not far away- this beach is technically within the Lake District National Park, and Ravenglass has plenty of well-signposted walks both along the coast and into the hills. Very close to the beach are the remains of “Glannoventa”, once an important Roman Fort.  The 12ft high walls of the former Bath House are still fairly impressive. Not far from the beach, Muncaster Castle is also well worth a detour - it would be easy to spend an entire day exploring the castle and gardens with their spectacular views.  This castle has been home to the Pennington family since 1208. The audio-tour commentary, narrated by members of the Pennington family is not to be missed.  The Hawk and Owl Centre belonging to the castle puts on interesting displays. Old and young alike will enjoy a trip on the “La-al Rattie Steam Railway”, one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in the country, which runs from Ravenglass, inland for 7 miles through spectacular, tranquil countryside, to beautiful Eskdale. There is a wealth of birdlife in the area around the beach.

Ravenglass Beach in Cumbria is a fantastic year-round, dog-friendly haven! The sand might be shingle-like, but that doesn't stop happy hounds. No seasonal restrictions mean endless fun for everyone. Parking is available nearby, although immediate facilities are limited. Swim safety is unconfirmed, so keep a close watch; it's best for experienced dog swimmers. Ideal for larger breeds who love to stretch their legs and enjoy a long run. Our tip? Bring fresh water, as there aren't many water fountains available, and the sea can be salty! We think your furry friend will love it!
