About This Place
Also known as Coilleag a’ Phrionnsa (Gaelic for “the Prince’s cockleshell strand”), Prince’s Beach is one of Scotland’s most historic. This peaceful stretch of white sand is famous as the landing site of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745, when he arrived from France to begin his ill-fated Jacobite rebellion. To commemorate this auspicious occasion there is a small monument above the beach. --> Not a lot has happened on the Outer Hebridean island of Eriskay since then, but this beach remains as beautiful and almost as peaceful as it was in those days. The sand here is soft and almost pure white, contrasting beautifully with the clear turquoise waters of the Atlantic. Behind Prince’s Beach is gently sloping machair, a type of coastal grassland that bursts into colour with wildflowers during the summer months. This stretch of coast is great for spotting wildlife with grey seals frequently seen lounging on nearby rocks and a variety of seabirds soaring overhead. The views from the beach stretch across the Sound of Barra making it a wonderful place to relax and soak up the history.
