About This Place
Just to the north of the popular Whitesands beach is the pleasant little cove of Porthmelgan. Only accessible from the coast path this is a great spot to escape the summer crowds. --> As with many of the lesser known beaches on the Pembrokeshire coast it is worth checking the tide before visiting as it might make the difference between a lovely sandy beach or perching on the boulders next to the cliff face! The small sandy cove is backed by high cliffs on three sides giving considerable protection from the prevailing winds. To the north of the bay is St Davidβs Head (Penmaen Dewi) which is home to a variety of seabirds along with ravens and peregrine falcons. This headland is also the location of a number of ancient monuments. Porthmelgan is one of the most westerly beaches in Wales, and although it receives some shelter from Ramsey Island and the Bishop & Clerks Reef just offshore, there can be strong currents. These treacherous rocks have been the site of any number of shipwrecks over the centuries. There is nothing in the way of facilities at Porthmelgan but there is are toilets, cafΓ© and car parking just along the coastpath at Whitesands.
π‘ Our Take
Looking for a dog-friendly beach in Wales? We recommend Porthmelgan! Your furry friends are welcome year-round on its sandy shores, perfect for zoomies and digging. Parking is available nearby, making access easy. While lifeguard services are nonexistent, the generally shallow water is fine for paddling. Nearest facilities are a bit of a drive, so pack accordingly. This beach is truly wonderful for well-socialised dogs to run freely; if you have an anxious pup, be mindful of other dogs enjoying their freedom. Remember to bring water and poo bags to keep Porthmelgan beautiful for everyone!
