About This Place

Porth Ysgo is a small secluded cove on the beautiful Llyn Peninsula. Owned by the National Trust this serene little beach is just far enough off the beaten track to rarely get busy. --> At high tide there isn’t a great deal here except a band of pebbles but as the tide goes out a good sized area of lovely, golden sand is revealed. Access to the beach is via a sturdy set of around 150 wooden stairs which run down the cliffside. There is also a bit of a walk from the nearest parking. Behind the beach are steeply sloping grassy cliffs. Set back a little way, towards the centre of the beach is Pistyll y Gaseg, a waterfall that can be quite impressive when the stream is in full flow after heavy rain. On either side of the beach are boulder fields. Whilst these may not be of much interest to most beachgoers they are a huge draw for the climbing community. Porth Ysgo is in fact one of the best bouldering destinations in Wales. Just behind the beach are the remains of the old Nant manganese mine. Production stopped in 1945 but prior to that a sizeable jetty existed at Porth Ysgo alongside ships were loaded up.

πŸ’‘ Our Take

Porth Ysgo Beach in beautiful Gwynedd, Wales, is a fantastic year-round haven for your furry friends! The largely sandy beach offers plenty of space for dogs to run and play off-leash, making it ideal for energetic breeds. Sadly, there are no facilities on the beach, so pack everything you need! Parking is limited. Be aware of the strong currents, making swimming potentially unsafe for both you and your dog. We recommend this beach for well-behaved dogs who enjoy a bit of adventure, but perhaps not puppies or those anxious around open water.
