About This Place

The small cove of Porth Y Cychod lies on the north coast of the Llŷn Peninsula, next door to better-known Porth Ysgaden. Its name means “cove of the boats” in Welsh, reflecting its past use as a landing place for small fishing vessels. Today, the fishing huts remain, but it is a quiet spot, with a raw, undeveloped feel. Very much one of the more secluded corners of the peninsula. --> The cove is narrow and steep-sided, with flat rocks and shingle underfoot rather than sand. At high tide, the sea pretty much fills the inlet, while at low tide, the rocky seabed and kelp beds are exposed. It’s not a swimming beach, but it’s well suited for rockpooling, snorkelling, launching kayaks, or simply soaking up the scenery. There are no facilities or signs, and access is by foot via informal paths from the main coast path that runs between Porth Ysgaden and other nearby coves. The surrounding cliffs and countryside support a variety of wildlife, and the area feels remote, even in summer.

💡 Our Take

Looking for a dog-friendly beach in Wales? We at DogParkUK recommend Porth y Cychod! With no restrictions, your furry friend can enjoy this sandy haven year-round. While we lack specific facility and safety information, the year-round access makes it a worthwhile stop. Parking info is unknown, so scout Google Maps beforehand. Nearest facilities are also unclear, so pack your own water! Ideal for dogs who love freedom. A word of caution: Always supervise your dog near the water, especially with unseen currents. Bring your confident swimmers here!
