About This Place

You’ll find this stretch of shingly sand and wooden groynes at the very north of the Suffolk coast. Just outside of Lowestoft, the beach here is a world apart from the busier South Beach. --> You won’t find any piers or amusements here, or any facilities for that matter. In fact the beach is backed by Gunton Warren, a nature reserve set among the dunes and heathland. As well as protecting this stretch from development the Warren is home to any number of less of often seen species of bird such as  firecrest, short-eared owl and dartford warblers. North Denes beach is dog friendly throughout the year and this nudges the numbers up a little in the summer, although it never gets busy. Even so, there is a generously sized (free) car park at the southern end of the beach. For such a low-key beach North Denes has a couple of claims to fame. Back in 2021 Banksy created his “Great British Spraycation” work on the seawall featuring a rat enjoying a cocktail. A year later Ed Sheeran chose the beach as the backdrop for the video of one of his songs.

💡 Our Take

Looking for a dog-friendly beach in Suffolk? North Denes Beach is your answer! Your furry pal can enjoy the sandy expanse year-round with no restrictions, which is fantastic. The beach offers calmer waters than some, but always be mindful of currents. Parking is typically available nearby. While immediate facilities are limited, you'll find amenities a short drive away. The soft sand is great for pups who love to dig. We recommend keeping puppies on a lead as visibility can be a bit limited at certain times. North Denes is especially ideal for dogs needing a gentle introduction to sea swimming.
