๐๏ธ Beach
Newark Bay
๐ Kirkwall, Orkney
About This Place
Newark Bay forms a lovely crescent of near white sand on the more sheltered south east coast of the main island. This is one of the more popular beaches on Orkney drawing people with varied interests. These include walkers and birdwatchers as well as small boat owners who use the slipway. --> Old stories tell of a mermaid regularly visiting the beach back in the late 1800s. Whilst you probably wonโt spot any mermaids thereโs a good chance of seeing seals or the odd porpoise. Itโs also a good place for spotting wading birds including purple sandpipers and ringed plovers.ย Not far off the coast is the islet of Copinsay which is home to a huge colony of guillemots along with fulmars, kittiwakes, razorbills and puffins. An RSPB reserve, the island can only be reached by boats which leave from nearby Skaill.
๐ก Our Take
Nestled in the scenic Orkney Islands, Newark Bay is a dog-friendly haven where your furry friend is welcome year-round. With its soft sandy shores and ample space, it's ideal for big dogs who love a good run. Parking nearby is convenient, and while facilities are limited, the open ocean offers a safe place for a splash, making it perfect for confident dog swimmers. One practical tip: bring your own water and snacks as amenities are scarce. Best for energetic pooches, it's a charming spot for a lively day out with your canine companion, recommended enthusiastically by DogParkUK!
