About This Place

Set at the mouth of the River Halladale, Melvich is yet another attractive beach to be found in this part of Scotland. The crescent shaped beach is backed by sand dunes which are carpeted with wild flowers in the Spring. At low tide there is a vast expanse of golden sand, which feels all the bigger as there is rarely anyone else here. --> Overlooking the bay is Bighouse Lodge. This was built in 1765 a a home for he Chief of Clan Mackay. The secluded bay can be found close by the hamlet of Portskerra and is reached via a short and narrow track signposted off the A896. From here it is a short walk through the dunes. Melvich is also known as one of the area’s best surf spots.
