This long, rural beach lies on the Mull of Kintyre Peninsula, between the small village of Machrihanaish to the south and Westport to the north. --> The beach offers a terrific 3-mile stretch of soft, clean sand and is a great place to come beachcombing or looking for shells and sea glass.  Most of the beach is backed by low, grassy dunes, a haven for a variety of plant and animal life.  This is an ideal destination for those looking for a quiet, wild beach, with lovely views.  Come here for long, solitary walks or in warm weather, find a spot to sit and paint the seascape and admire the wide open sky whilst listening to the waves crashing against the shore. Wildlife here is abundant.  As well as birds, there is a possibility of spotting seals and even the occasional otter. The top end of the beach (nearest to Westport) is popular with surfers.  Further south, signs warn of the dangers of strong undercurrents.  Because of strong currents, the beach is not really suitable for bathing. On a clear day it is possible to see the Irish coast, which is only 12 miles away.  You might find that your car radio picks up Irish radio channels from here! The area is popular with golfers.  There are two excellent golf clubs near the beach: Machrihanaish Dunes, and championship-class Machrihanaish Golf Club.
