Kenfig Sands is a long, wild stretch of beach situated between Porthcawl and Port Talbot. Backed by the expansive Kenfig National Nature Reserve, the beach feels remote and untouched, with no development on the shoreline and sweeping views across Swansea Bay. --> The beach itself is mostly flat and sandy, stretching for miles with dunes and marram grass behind it. Given that the beach runs along the edge of the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) there are no facilities, shops or cafés. That said the Site of Nature Reserve Visitors Centre does offer snacks and toilets, but it’s about a 15 minute walk from the beach. The dunes form part of one of the largest sand dune systems in Europe and support a wide range of plant and animal life, including rare orchids and migratory birds. Access to the beach involves a walk of about 20 plus minutes through the reserve from the main car park near Kenfig Pool. It’s not difficult, but the distance and lack of signage give the beach a more secluded feel and Kenfig is generally the quietest beach around. You can also walk round from Porthcawl, but it takes longer. Swimming is possible, though the sea can be rough, and there are no lifeguards. Generally speaking though, you’re more likely to come across anglers and the occasional horse and rider on this expansive beach.
