Jenny Watt's Cove
📍 Bangor, Gwynedd
About This Place
Jenny Watts Cove (or Brompton Bay) is a small cove on the southern shore of Belfast Lough, on the western edge of Bangor. Tucked between rocky outcrops, it’s a quiet spot with a mix of sand, shingle and smooth rock. For beachgoers it is best visited at low tide when more of the cove is exposed, whilst for those taking a dip, high tide is best. --> The cove takes its name from Jenny Watt, a local smuggler and folk legend said to have used the nearby caves to hide contraband in during the 18th century. Today, it’s a peaceful place to sit by the water, explore the rocks or watch the boats entering the marina. The water is usually calm thanks to the shelter of the Lough making the cove very popular for wild swimming. You’ll find swimmers from the “Brompton Belles” and” Beaux Dippers” taking the plunge here all year round - whatever the weather. Brompton Bay is also a good diving spot, suiting all levels. Access is via the North Down coastal path which runs through Bangor town centre, and while there are no facilities directly on the beach, cafés, toilets and parking are only a short walk away. The surrounding cliffs and coastal paths give great views across Belfast Lough towards the hills of Carrickfergus and Whitehead beyond.
