Greenan is a sandy beach, with a few rocks, nestled in between the mouth of the River Doon and a small headland on which Greenan Castle, a tower house from the 16th century is perched in a commanding position overlooking the beach. Walking is a popular pastime in the vicinity and there are a number of coastal paths which take in the views over the Firth of Clyde across to the mountainous Isle of Arran. The town of Ayr can also be seen from the beach. --> Parking for the beach can be found off both Greenan Road and Castle Walk on the outskirts of the town of Doonfoot. Both have access to the beach along short, flat footpaths across the grassy area and dunes that back the beach. Facilities such as shops and restaurants can be found in the centre of Doonfoot, about half a mile from the beach. The larger town of Ayr is a few miles to the north and has a railway station with direct services to Glasgow.
