About This Place

Glan-y-Don beach makes up the western end of a vast stretch of sand which curves all the way from Pwllheli to the Penychain headland, about 3 miles to the east. The beach is mostly sandy with some pebbly areas, especially at high tide, and it tends to be less busy than the main Pwllheli South Beach nearby. --> To the back of the beach is the marina and at the southern end the River (Afon) Erch flows into the sea. It can be a little seaweedy and muddy at this end, but as you head towards Abererch it becomes increasingly sandy. Much of the beach here is east-facing which means, not only is it generally more sheltered from the wind, but there are spectacular views across Cardigan Bay to the mountains of Snowdonia. Traeth Glan-y-Don is a good place for collecting shells and walking, especially along the coastal path that links the beach to other parts of the peninsula. The area is also popular with locals and dog walkers, as it’s accessible year-round and most of the beach has no restrictions in summer. Glan-y-Don is also home to Plas Heli, the Welsh National Sailing Academy.

πŸ’‘ Our Take

Hey dog lovers! DogParkUK recommends Glan-y-Don Beach - a fantastic, unrestricted beach haven. While specifics about the sand type and facilities are scarce, the BIG draw is that dogs are welcome here all year round! We don't know the exact location so ensure you locate it first! It's perfect for energetic dogs who love to run free. However, be mindful of swim safety, especially with strong currents. Parking details are hazy too, so pre-planning is essential. If you’re visiting with a new pup or a nervous dog, take them at a quieter time for a first dip!
