About This Place

Donaghadee Harbour beach is a small stretch of sand and shingle set within the pretty little harbour at Donaghadee. To one side is the short promenade, and to the other, the harbour wall with its attractive 19th century lighthouse. --> The beach itself varies greatly according to the tide; towards low tide an expanse of sand stretching almost to the lighthouse is revealed, whilst high tides leave nothing but a narrow strip of shingle against the seafront wall. Being so sheltered has made the beach quite popular with sea swimmers who make the plunge into the chilly waters of the Irish sea here all year round. Donaghadee’s waterfront runs right behind the beach and has plenty of traditional charm, with cafés, pubs and restaurants all overlooking the harbour. In fact you’ll find one of the reputedly oldest pub in Ireland here - Grace Neill’s. This is the closest point to Scotland on the Irish coast and there are views across to the Copeland Islands and Scotland on clear days.

💡 Our Take

Donaghadee Beach in County Down is perfect for playful pups year-round! The sandy shores offer plenty of space for digging and zoomies. Parking is readily available nearby making access a breeze. While there aren't immediate facilities on the beach itself, Donaghadee town is a short stroll away. This makes it great for quick toilet stops. Always be aware of tides and currents: supervise your dogs closely when swimming. This wide-open beach is ideal for energetic dogs who love to run, but might overwhelm more anxious pooches. Bring water and a towel for your sandy adventurer; you'll need them!
