Collywell Bay
📍 Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear
About This Place
Collywell is a rocky bay located just around the corner from Seaton Sluice. A ramp leads down to an area of shingle backed by a sea wall. --> The beach is generally quiet and most commonly frequented by anglers. The bay’s most defining feature is the sea stack known as Charley’s Garden. This sandstone pinnacle gets its name from one of the locals, a Mr Charles Dockwray. The story goes that he cultivated the top of the rock, growing vegetables there. Why he did this is not known! The name Collywell comes from “Colly Well” which was a spring located at the base of the cliffs.
