About This Place

Castlehill Beach lies close to the eastern tip of Scotland’s northern coastline, between Castletown and Dunnet.  The beach forms the western end of Dunnet Bay, a long stretch of sand and shingle, backed by grassy dunes.  Behind the dunes, the A836 runs adjacent to the beach. The beach is used by surfers and is a good place to come for tranquil walks.  The area is also popular with birdwatchers, particularly at Dunnet Head and St John’s Pool.  --> The nearest facilities are in the small village of Castletown, which has a working flagstone harbour, a hotel, a guesthouse, fish and chip shop and grocery store.  A heritage trail leads visitors through sites connected to the town’s flagstone quarrying industry. Dunnet Head, the headland which contains the most northerly point of the British mainland, lies just beyond the north end of Dunnet/Murkle Bay, and is well worth a visit.

💡 Our Take

Castlehill Beach in Dunnet Bay, Scotland, is calling all canine adventurers! We at DogParkUK love that dogs are welcome year-round on this sandy haven. With unrestricted access, it's brilliant for energetic pups to run free. Parking is conveniently located nearby for easy access to the beach. While we don't have info on facilities, the vast space and soft sand make it ideal for big dogs who need a good stretch. Check local tides before you go: the bay is exposed and safe swimming can depend on the tide levels. Perfect for confident swimmers; less experienced dogs should be kept on a lead near the water.
