About This Place

The two kilometers of immediately recognizable pebbles that make up Budleigh Salterton’s beach mark the western start of Devon’s Jurassic Coast. Part of this ancient World Heritage Coastline, Budleigh Salterton is popular with families due to its calm, clean waters which are perfect for bathing, although the water has been known to occasionally suffer from algal blooms. --> Beachgoers also have access to not one, but three beach cafes, beach huts which are available for hire and all the amenities in the nearby, pleasant little town of Budleigh Salterton. On the quieter, Western end of the beach, large red cliffs rise up from the shoreline. These sandstone formations date back to the Triassic period, about 240 million years ago. Frequent erosion and falling rock is common here, so visitors are asked to take care when exploring this area of the beach, especially when with dogs or children. The more popular, Eastern end of Budleigh Salterton is home to the Otter Estuary and its nature reserve. A well-presented visitor’s centre as well as two viewing platforms allow visitors to explore a variety of saltmarsh vegetation as well as a large wintering wildfowl population.

💡 Our Take

Looking for a sandy Devon escape, dog lovers? Budleigh Salterton Beach welcomes your furry friends year-round! Your dogs will love the pebble-mix sand, perfect for digging and zoomies. Parking is available, making access straightforward. Nearest facilities are a short walk away in town. We recommend keeping a close eye, as swim safety can vary. Budleigh’s open space is best for dogs of all sizes, even those who need a bit more room. But, be mindful of the pebbles that can be difficult for tiny paws. Overall we think Budleigh Salterton makes a fantastic, relaxed beach trip with your best pal!
