About This Place

The Brough of Birsay is an uninhabited tidal island off the north-west coast of Mainland, Orkney. It is home to Pictish and Norse settlements as well as dramatic cliffs and a modern lighthouse. --> Separated from the mainland by the 240-metre (790-foot) Sound of Birsay at high tide, the island is accessible on foot at low tide via a largely natural causeway.Brough of Birsay beach lies at either end of the crossing and is a pleasant mix of sand and rocky flats which are home to an abundance of rock pools.

πŸ’‘ Our Take

Looking for a fantastic dog-friendly beach in Orkney? DogParkUK recommends Brough of Birsay Beach! Your furry friends are welcome year-round to scamper across the expansive sands with no restrictions. Parking's available nearby, but facilities are limited, so pack water! The swimming seems safe, but always keep a close eye, particularly with strong currents. Birsay’s wide open space makes it PERFECT for energetic dogs who love to run! Be mindful of the tide times, as access to the Brough itself can be cut off. It's a dream spot for well-behaved dogs of all breeds to socialise and have fun!
