This award-winning beach near Kingsbridge in South Devon is a popular destination for families and watersports enthusiasts alike, and it’s not difficult to see why.  Bigbury-on-Sea offers the visitor a good stretch of clean, golden sand, safe, shallow waters perfect for paddling in, interesting rock pools to explore and a good range of on-site facilities.  --> 250 metres offshore lies Burgh Island with its iconic Art-Deco hotel, said to be the inspiration for Agatha Christie’s murder mystery “And Then There Were None”. At low tide the island is joined to the beach by a sandy causeway.  When the tide is out a sea tractor ferries passengers between the island and the beach.  The beach lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has a pretty backdrop of rocky cliffs and rolling hills of the South Hams.  There are a number of interesting walking trails nearby, including a scenic stretch of the South West Coastal Path. Bigbury-on-Sea is a good place to try out kitesurfing, body boarding and sea kayaking.  The Discovery Surf School is situate on the beach and offers lessons in a variety of watersports as well as equipment hire.  Other facilities on the beach include a beach shop, toilets, a first aid station and a popular café.  There is a lifeguard presence from May to September. The beach has a pay-for car park, accessible from Marine Drive.
