Ballyhornan Beach
📍 Downpatrick, Down
About This Place
Ballyhornan beach is set in front of the small village between Kilclief and Ardglass, on what is Ireland’s most easterly coast. The beach is approximately 1km in length with a mix of sand and shingle, backed by grassy dunes and low cliffs, and it tends to stay fairly quiet, even in summer. --> Access is easy, with both ramp and steps down to the beach from the small car park close to the shore. Dogs are welcome, and the open space makes it a good spot to relax. Ballyhornan Beach isn’t developed for tourism, so there are no cafés as such. There is, however, a seasonal coffee shack which sells drinks and snacks. Just of Ballyhornan is Guns Island. You can wade over to the island on the lowest tides, but it is easy to get cut off, so we’d recommend using a kayak or the like.
💡 Our Take
We at DogParkUK highly recommend Ballyhornan Beach, a delightful sandy haven on the coast! What makes it so paw-some? Dogs are welcome ALL year round, giving you freedom for off-lead adventures. The soft sand makes it great for sensitive paws. Keep an eye out though, as the nearest facilities might require a bit of a walk, so pack accordingly! This beach is best suited for energetic, confident dogs that enjoy a good run and a splash. Be aware of strong currents and always keep a close watch on your dogs when swimming.
