Why the UK Is One of the Best Countries in the World for Dog Walking
The United Kingdom has something remarkably rare: a legal right to roam across vast tracts of beautiful countryside. The England Coast Path, the Pennine Way, the South West Coast Path โ over 190,000 miles of public rights of way criss-cross the British Isles, more dense per square mile than almost anywhere else on Earth.
Add to that the access provisions of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act, which gives walkers the freedom to explore mountain, moorland, heath, and downland, and you have an unparalleled trail network waiting to be explored with your four-legged friend.

Seasonal Walking Guide
Spring ๐ฑ
Spring Walks: New Growth & Wildflowers
Spring brings bluebells, primroses, and fresh leaves. The warming weather makes longer walks enjoyable, but watch for nesting birds on moorlands.
- โ Best for: Woodland walks with bluebells (AprilโMay)
- โ Watch out for: Ground-nesting birds on open moorland
- โ Pack: Light rain layer โ spring showers are common
Summer โ๏ธ
Summer Walks: Early Starts & Staying Cool
Summer heat can make walks dangerous for dogs. Pavements get very hot (can burn paw pads at 25ยฐC+). Walk early morning or late evening.
- โ Best for: Woodland shade, coastal breezes, high altitude
- โ Watch out for: Hot pavements, heatstroke, blue-green algae
- โ Pack: Extra water (minimum 250ml per hour)
Autumn ๐
Autumn Walks: Foliage & Foraging Hazards
Autumn is many dog owners' favourite season. Cooler temperatures, stunning colour, and crispy leaves underfoot make for magical walks.
- โ Best for: All-day walks, hills and moorlands
- โ Watch out for: Conkers (toxic), toxic mushrooms, fireworks
- โ Pack: Towel for muddy walks, high-vis in low light
Winter โ๏ธ
Winter Walks: Shorter Days & Hidden Dangers
Shorter days mean less daylight, but winter walks have their own rewards โ crisp air, fewer crowds, and beautiful frost or snow.
- โ Best for: Bright frosty days, post-Christmas energy burns
- โ Watch out for: Ice (riverbanks especially dangerous), frozen lakes
- โ Pack: Torch or headlamp, paw protector balm
Walk Safety Tips for Dogs
Lyme Disease & Ticks
Ticks are prevalent in long grass and woodland across the UK. They can transmit Lyme disease. Check your dog thoroughly after every walk, especially around ears, paws, and underbelly. Use a tick preventative year-round.
Livestock & Sheep
Sheep worrying is a serious offence under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953. If your dog chases livestock, you could face prosecution. Keep dogs on a lead near all livestock โ even friendly dogs can chase.
Water Safety
Not all water is safe for dogs. Blue-green algae can be fatal. Strong currents in rivers and the sea can overwhelm even strong swimmers. Always throw sticks in a straight line โ not across rivers.
Heat Safety
Hot pavements burn paw pads when ambient temperature exceeds 25ยฐC. A good test: if you can't hold your hand flat on the ground for 7 seconds, it's too hot. Never leave dogs in cars.
Mud & Terrain Hazards
Deep mud can trap dogs, especially small breeds. Riverbanks can collapse. After heavy rain, check for flooding on usual routes. In winter, frozen fields and ice-covered lakes are hazardous.
